Ever wonder what the Nuestro Mundo staff does on the weekends?

Well, two weekends ago we were at a Citysprouts garden conference, last weekend we were at MABE's Dual Language Bilingual Education Annual Conference and a RI Acts of Kindness celebration in honor of Women’s History Day.

This weekend we will be at the 2026 RIEEA Summit: Education Through Cultivation: Rooting Teaching, Farming, & Healing in Relationship to the Land. Not too late to join us! Online registrations are being accepted until 12pm tomorrow (Friday).

RI Acts of Kindness Brunch

The RI Education Collective hosted the event to benefit Madres Para La Educación , a program that uplifts and empowers mothers to continue serving as strong advocates for their children and leaders in our community. They also collected paper goods and first aid supplies for ours truly, NM ��

Spring Family Conferences

March 13th concludes our 2nd trimester of the school year and family conferences are scheduled the March 19-20 to review each student's progress. This week also brings the Book Fair March 16-20 (parent shopping during conferences Thursday night and all day Friday) and...

Dear Nuestro Mundo Families and Friends,

The Blizzard of ’26 was one for the books! We are grateful for the incredible support from our families, the City, our building owners—who sent crews to clear the snow—and our staff, who showed up for high quality virtually instruction.

We also appreciate RIDE’s approval to hold virtual instruction days and the wonderful participation from our students and families. While this storm may have surpassed the Blizzard of 1978 in snowfall, technology made all the difference, allowing learning to continue even while we were safely at home ��

This aligns well with our character education theme for the month: Perseverance and Resilience. See how we kicked off this theme in our Monday assemblies below, with music, student feedback and recognition.

Today we practiced one of the safety drills required by the Rhode Island Department of Education. Schools are required to conduct different types of drills throughout the year—such as fire drills, lockdown drills, and evacuation drills—to ensure that students and staff know how to respond calmly and safely in the event of an emergency.

Our staff prepares students in an age-appropriate way so that the process feels routine and not frightening. Practicing these procedures helps ensure that everyone in our school community knows what to do to stay safe.

Perseverance Assemblies

Question & Answer Relationships (QAR)

QAR (Question–Answer Relationships) is a reading comprehension strategy that helps students think critically about where to find answers—whether directly in the text or by using their own thinking. This has been a focus at NM this year during small group instruction, reading buddies, and in our Learning Academy after-school, school break, and summer programs. Dear Nuestro Mundo Families and Friends,

At NM, students learn in two languages every day. Through biliteracy instruction, they make meaningful cross-linguistic connections that strengthen understanding in both languages. But language development is only one pillar of a strong dual language program. The other is high academic achievement.

Mastering the Common Core standards while simultaneously acquiring a new language takes dedication, collaboration, and support from an entire community. It truly takes a village.

That is why this year we have expanded our support systems. We have added Learning Academies after school and during school breaks, along with additional tutors who provide targeted small-group instruction to ensure every student can thrive.

We are deeply grateful for our village — our generous donors, engaged families, supportive community members, and our exceptional staff — who make this work possible every day.

The Invasive Green Crab

Our middle school students had the opportunity to participate in lessons on the invasive green crab last week, covering many science standards on ecology and biology. We didn't get to eat any this time, but maybe next time ��

Learning Academies

Today marks the conclusion of our first Learning Academy held during a school vacation — and it was a tremendous success!

Our teachers did an outstanding job delivering focused reading comprehension instruction. Students were highly engaged throughout the program and demonstrated meaningful growth, as reflected in their post-assessment results.

We’re excited to build on this momentum in April. Our April Vacation Learning Academy will follow a similar structure and schedule (see below), with a targeted focus on strengthening math skills.

Nuestro Mundo PCS Improved 100% on RICAS

Dear Nuestro Mundo Families and Friends,

We are proud to share that Nuestro Mundo Public Charter School has shown significant improvement in its English Language Arts (ELA) performance on the Rhode Island Comprehensive Assessment System (RICAS). Since opening in 2021, our school has been committed to fostering bilingual education and ensuring academic growth. This year, we are thrilled to report a 100% increase in RICAS scores!

In the 2022-2023 school year, 10.2% of students met or exceeded expectations. Fast forward to 2023-2024, and 20% of our 105 students achieved the same milestone. This leap forward speaks volumes about the hard work of our students, teachers and staff.

Under the leadership of our Head of School, Danira Ortiz, we have implemented targeted initiatives focused on closing the achievement gap, such as hiring interventionists and investing in professional development. Our vision remains clear: to empower multilingual learners and continue this upward trajectory. We are not just a bilingual school for English learners—Nuestro Mundo is a place where students, whether they are learning English or Spanish, are empowered and guided as global citizens.

We look forward to continuing this progress and welcoming even more families into our vibrant community!

A Summer of Growth: Building Our Gardens from Ground to Roof

Dear Nuestro Mundo Families and Friends,

We are absolutely thrilled to share some fantastic developments at Nuestro Mundo this summer! A huge and heartfelt thank you goes out to Groundwork Rhode Island for their incredible support. They have been instrumental in helping us transform our school grounds into vibrant, thriving gardens. From teaching our students the ins and outs of planting to building beautiful garden beds and assisting with garden care throughout the summer, their contributions have been invaluable. ��

But the excitement doesn’t stop there! We’re also overjoyed to announce the addition of a third garden area—this time, on the roof of our new building! That’s right, our very own rooftop garden is soon to be in full bloom, bringing even more opportunities for our students to engage with nature and learn about sustainability in a hands-on way. ��❤️

These gardens are not just about growing plants; they are about nurturing our students' connection to the environment, fostering responsibility, and empowering them with the skills to make a positive impact on their community. We can’t wait to see the fruits—literally and figuratively—of all this hard work!
